Fine Motor Skills with Matthew Brown

How do we learn to listen more deeply—to works of art, to the spaces around us, and to our own thoughts? Join Denver artist, DJ, and cultural organizer Matthew Brown (Fancy Matthew) for a special edition of Fine Motor Skills, his contemplative workshop exploring the creative possibilities of focused attention.

Inspired by the immersive listening practices at the heart of Still in Sound, participants will gather in the galleries for a quiet, screen-free, no-talking experience of writing, drawing, sketching, or journaling. Accompanied by a live all-vinyl soundtrack, Fine Motor Skills explores what Brown calls “slow music”—moving fluidly between ambient soundscapes, low-BPM rhythms, and other spacious, unhurried forms of listening that encourage sustained attention without fading into the background. As you slow down to observe closely and engage in analog creative practice, you’ll be invited to experience how writing and drawing by hand can open different ways of thinking, revealing new possibilities for encountering art, sound, and yourself.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own drawing and writing materials that comply with the Museum’s approved materials policy. Limited materials will be available to borrow from the Museum’s Making Space.

The program costs $15 for adults, $13 for seniors, and free for CSM members. Program costs include museum admission for the day. Space is limited, and advanced registration is required to attend in person at the Clyfford Still Museum.

Matthew Brown is a Denver-based vinyl DJ (Fancy Matthew) and creative entrepreneur whose work has centered on music, gathering spaces, and bringing people together for more than two decades. He is a co-founder of Weird Touch, a 12-year-running all-vinyl dance party, and the founder and resident DJ of Fine Motor Skills, a long-running morning series built around “slow” music and intentional listening. He is also the founder and owner of FM, the independent Denver retail and cultural space he established in 2006. His latest project is a new hi-fi event space focused on intimate gatherings and exceptional sound – exploring how ritual, deep listening, and shared experience can create new ways for people to connect through music.
